Hurricane Florence comes to visit!!

Hurricane Florence came to visit over the weekend. I'm happy to report that (thus far at least) there was minimal damage to our fleet. That being said - there were several near misses and one complete sinking!!

I was not on the island - having relocated to Zurich for September through mid January - but was very much in touch with people on the island with regard to hurricane preparation. In some ways not being there was worse since I (along with Laura) was living vicariously through the Internet and people's descriptions!

The worst of the weather came through from Sunday night through Monday evening, bringing winds gusting over 100 mph at various locations. The direction suited some folks (Jews Bay and White's Island!) for the majority of the time - but was not as kind to the Pitt's Bay / Soncy Bay / Agar's Island moorings.

Pitt's Bay in particular took a pounding - especially with the swell and associated backwash. Encore was lucky not to go down (see photo) - being saved by Bob and Janice who swam out to her and managed to empty her with buckets (speaking from experience of much less water in an IOD - this was a VERY strenuous activity!!!!) Privateer was not so lucky - and ended up on the bottom still attached to her mooring. I've been told she was refloated - haven't had the report on her condition as yet.

In Agar's Island - the only two reports were from Sacha regarding Ariel and Peppercorn. Ariel also nearly went down - saved this time by Blair Simmons who swam out and baled her out. Peppercorn didn't have the water issue - but did have her chain rode come out of the bow chock - which would have likely sawn the bow off if not noticed by the Simmons' crowd and again was dealt with by Blair. Well done Blair & the Simmons'

Elsewhere - the boat that probably was the most sheltered was high and dry - Vrengen is in our backyard!! The other Jews Bay boat (Solna) was sheltered for the majority of the storm and came through OK.

I haven't heard any other reports from any owners as yet - so have to assume they are OK!
